Genetics

Strawberry Cough genetics: Haze × Strawberry Fields

Haze × Strawberry Fields is the standard listed parentage, but the original Strawberry Cough’s exact pedigree and breeder are disputed rather than documented as settled fact.1,2,3,4 The safest description is a clone associated with Kyle Kushman’s distribution story and a lineage repeated by strain databases and seed sellers.2,5,6

The commonly listed parents

Leafly says Strawberry Cough is thought to be a Haze × Strawberry Fields cross, while Weedmaps, AllBud and SeedFinder list the same pair.1,2,3,4 Haze is itself a broad, historically important name: Leafly describes it as a sativa that took root in Santa Cruz in the 1960s and identifies Blue Dream and Jack Herer among its children.7

The sources opened for this guide repeat the Strawberry Fields name but do not independently settle the identity of the parent in the older Strawberry Cough account.1,2,3,4

What the clone story establishes, and what it does not

Weedmaps says a novice Connecticut grower gave Kushman a clone, that he distributed it around New York and later brought it west; it also says the original breeder and exact pedigree remain disputed.2 Pacific Stone and the Royal Queen Seeds listing repeat versions of the clone-and-distribution account, with the latter calling the creator an unnamed Connecticut grower.5,6

Claims that Strawberry Fields acquired its aroma by growing among strawberry plants are presented as folklore, not evidence. The Royal Queen Seeds listing expressly says it cannot confirm or deny that companion-planting claim, so it is not used as a causal explanation here.6

Original clone and seed versions

SeedFinder files Strawberry Cough under Clone Only Strains and calls it clone-only.4 The Royal Queen Seeds product sold by North Atlantic Seed is a feminized photoperiod version carrying the same stated Haze × Strawberry Fields lineage, not proof that every seed product reproduces the original clone.6

This distinction matters because a label records a market name, not a genetic identity. The state-lab dataset uses strict name matching and aggregates flower sold under the plain name; it cannot identify which clone, selection or seed line produced a test.8

Documented descendants

Leafly names Nerds and Strawberry Lemonade as Strawberry Cough children.1 SeedFinder’s clone-only genealogy lists 108 direct descendants and supplies named crosses including Blueberry Cough, Brian Berry Cough, Black Cough and Aqua Verde.4

What the lab data adds

The aggregate contains 231 strictly matched flower tests under the plain Strawberry Cough name. It excludes 223 near-match results and 176 strain-versus-product-name conflicts before making potency statistics.8 The records identify labels, not pedigree, so they cannot settle the Haze × Strawberry Fields account.8
